XF Fanfic One Line Challenge: "I can't believe I let you cut my hair!"

X-Files Fanfic One Line Challenge: Must start with the line: “I can’t believe I let you cut my hair!”
Word Count: Under 650 Words

TITLE: Home Salon

“I can’t believe I let you cut my hair, Fox,” Sam giggled. She was having a great time. “This is so much better than when Mom took me to the mainland for a haircut. And going to the mainland is better than when she makes me go to that boring salon here on the island where all the women sit around and gossip. Only Mom always said that most of them aren’t ladies, and they aren’t gossiping. They’re sharing important information. And because Mom wants to hear that information, I have to be quiet the whole time. It’s absolute torture.”

Fox laughed, “I hate that salon. Mom takes me with her when she goes, ‘cause she says I can’t be trusted at home alone. Hold still for just a minute, Sam.”

Sam sat still, counting to 60 as fast as she could, then launched into a chair-spin.

When Teena Mulder came in from outside her heart froze in her throat. There was an inordinate amount of laughter coming from the upstairs bedrooms, and that usually meant trouble.

She followed the sound of laughter. She found the kids in Sam’s room. Dark curls scattered the floor, and she forced her eyes upward to the source. Sam’s long curly hair short and haphazardly cut in chunks. Teena’s eyes focused on her son, who was holding the scissors. He was grinning wildly, chopping away at her hair with gusto as her daughter swung the chair back and forth, singing a song from that terrible kid’s show with the giant-headed atrocity.

She found her voice, “What’s going on here?”

Both kids stopped instantly. Sam’s foot hit the ground, and the chair stopped spinning. Neither of them knew what to do.

Sam was always the one who was quick on her feet, though. She stood up and went to the mirror, looking at her coiffure, running her hands through it like she’d seen her mother do with her own new haircuts, “I can’t believe I let you cut my hair!” She frowned. It didn’t have enough impact.

She tried again. “What have you done to my beautiful hair?” she wailed.

Teena watched her little primadonna primp her hair in front the gilt-framed mirror on the wall, and shook her head, “Fox, go get a broom and clean this up. Sam, you’re coming with me. We have just enough time to get to the salon before they close.”

Sam stared at her mother, appalled, “How come Fox gets to stay home alone, and I have to go to the salon? It’s so boring there!”

Teena regarded her son. He was as much to blame for the haircut as Sam. Perhaps more. He should have known better. She looked at Sam, then Fox, then Sam again, “You’re right. You shouldn’t be the only one to suffer. Fox, you’ll clean this up when we get home. We’re all going to the salon while Sam gets that fixed.”
