A doorbell sounded through the well kept, Greenwich home, and Teena slowly rose from where she sat at the kitchen table. She silently cursed getting older, and wished that she had the same level of energy that she had taken for granted decades ago.
True, she still had the beauty of her youth, but what she longed for was the lost vibrance; something that had disappeared not long after Sam had been taken from them.
Teena made her way to the front door, and opened it, expecting to see a delivery man. Instead, she was met with an empty porch. Well, empty except for the large bouquet of tulips, and a small envelope.
Taking both inside, Teena sat down on the sofa, opened up the envelope, and began to read.
My dearest Teena,
Happy anniversary.
I know that we didn’t part on the best of terms, and that you
may wish to forget our anniversary entirely, but after so many
happy years together, I cannot let the day go by without remembering
what we once had together.
Memories of those days and nights together stay with me always.
Your soft touch, the first thing you said to me when we met, your bright smile,
the laughter of the children...every memory is etched in my mind. Thank you.
I still love you, my beautiful girl.
The card was unsigned, but Teena knew in an instant who it was from. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply, catching the scent of Morleys that came off of the stationery.
For a few moments, Teena allowed herself the freedom of memories, wishing, too, for a second chance.
